Ainsley McNaught

Hi, I’m Ainsley McNaught, a Registered Psychotherapist who works with adults and young adults ages 18+ navigating anxiety, depression, shame, big life changes, addiction concerns, grief, emotional overwhelm, and those confusing “what am I doing with my life?” moments that can show up in early adulthood and beyond. Together, we can work toward understanding those patterns with compassion instead of judgment.

I often tell clients: you are not a problem to solve, you are a mystery to understand and we’ll figure it out together.

I’m especially passionate about supporting people struggling with addiction and substance use through a harm reduction lens, understanding that many of you struggling with unwanted habits are coping with much deeper pain underneath the surface. Often, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, or shame are sitting quietly in the background, shaping patterns in ways that can feel very draining.

I tend to connect well with people who are curious about themselves and want to dig a little deeper than just surface level counselling. Therapy with me is not about being “fixed” or becoming a perfect version of yourself. I see you as a layered, complicated, resilient person trying to make sense of your experiences.

Ainsley Is Trained In The Following Methods

  • CBT Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • DBT Dialectical Behavioural Therapy

  • Compassion Focused psychotherapy
  • Humanistic psychotherapy
  • Person-centered therapy
  • Mindfulness based mental health approaches
  • Strengths-Based
  • Motivational Interviewing

My Journey To This Moment

I grew up here in Cobourg surrounded by family and have a strong sense of connection to the community. My grandparents especially shaped the way I approach people to this day (with kindness and humour).

I’ll be honest, I didn’t dream about becoming a therapist because I genuinely did not know therapy was even a career option! What eventually led me toward this work was my own difficult experience trying to access mental health support as a teenager. I remember feeling unseen and unsupported by my doctor, and that experience sparked a curiosity about mental health and what meaningful care could actually look like.

As I moved through university, that curiosity grew into passion. After graduating, I found work at a clinic that helps people who are struggling with opioid use. There, I worked in various capacities supporting individuals navigating addiction, trauma, poverty, anxiety, depression, and immense stigma.  That experience profoundly shaped me as both a person and therapist. I witnessed how deeply people can struggle while still fighting incredibly hard for themselves and their future. It gave me so much respect for the courage it takes to heal and the importance of creating spaces where people feel welcome to be themselves and supported in their truth.

In large part from this experience at the treatment center, I decided to go back to school to become a Psychotherapist. While completing my Master’s in Counselling, I had an internship with the mental health team in the emergency department in Cobourg. Working in crisis settings reinforced how powerful shame can be in preventing people from seeking help and how important compassion, authenticity, and human connection are in therapy.

My Approach to Therapy is Through Connection and Collaborative

I draw from CBT, DBT, ACT, Solution Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Parts Work (influenced by IFS), and Inner Child Work, but I strongly believe therapy should feel accessible and human, not overly clinical or filled with step by step stereo-like instructions. I focus on using language and structures that actually make sense for the person sitting across from me.

Our Sessions Will be a Balance of Compassion with Accountability and Self-Empowerment

We’ll spend time exploring where certain behaviours or coping strategies come from, looking at how they may have once served a purpose, while also finding practical tools for change. I also believe there is room for humour in therapy. Sometimes laughter becomes part of healing too!

Outside of work, I recharge through creative hobbies like crochet, puzzles, and painting. I’ve also discovered that I love badminton and now play a few times each week when I have time.

How To Connect For Counselling

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck in difficult patterns, struggling with shame, or simply trying to better understand yourself, therapy can be a space to slow down, unpack what’s going on, and begin moving toward meaningful change. You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

I offer virtual and in-person therapy through Integra Skills Counselling and would be honoured to support you wherever you are in your journey. Reach out today to book a consultation and see whether working together feels like the right fit.
