About Cheryl White
Hi, I’m Cheryl,
I am an experienced Registered Psychotherapist with a broad range of skills to support individuals, couples, and families. If you are seeking deeper connection with your loved ones, looking to understand yourself and others better, and to find more effective ways of coping with the stress life brings, I am here to support you. My approach to therapy is centered on authenticity and a sincere connection with you.
“What you seek is seeking you.” Rumi
My path to become a therapist began with an education in language and speech science. From this first interest, I began working with children, youth, and families to develop social, emotional, and communication skills. For sixteen years I worked in both a clinical environment, and in family’s homes seeing first-hand how big change can happen from even a small amount of support. I developed an adolescent support program with the Geneva Center for Autism, and while I know I did great work while in this profession, I also saw I needed more tools to support the mental health of both the young people I was seeing, as well as their families. Seeing so many couples, families and individuals struggle with burnout, anxiety and depression was a deep motivation for me to finally make the move and go back to school to become a psychotherapist.
Interwoven with my many years of professional training and experience, I also bring to my work who I am as a person. Having grown up in Newfoundland, travelled to British Columbia for school, and settled finally in Ontario, I have experienced many transitions and been fortunate to have had wonderful support along the way, including my own therapists. From my early twenties I have valued the sanctuary the therapeutic space provides to be able to hear my own voice, gain insight and new perspectives, and at times be challenged to change (and sometimes accept!) to improve my circumstances. As a therapist I view myself as not an expert but rather a fellow traveler in this life. I am honoured to walk beside you for as long or as little as would be helpful to you.
What You Can Expect In Our Therapy Sessions
In therapy, I believe in meeting you exactly where you are, offering a supportive partnership as we work together to explore what’s happening for you in your current life. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just curious about getting to know yourself better, we’ll explore things together and figure out new ways to help you feel more comfortable and confident in your life.
My style of therapy is rooted in Emotionally Focused Therapy, CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), Acceptance Commitment Therapy and Narrative but what matters most to me is finding the approach that best fits your unique needs. Together, we’ll explore your thoughts, emotions, and body responses, helping you uncover insights and decide on new practical tools you can carry with you in your daily life.
I See Couples, Families & Individuals As a Therapist
In couples/relationship therapy, I start by meeting with all partners in the relationship together to create a foundation of shared understanding around their goals and challenges. Following this initial meeting I will hold an individual session with each partner to gather relevant history and hear a bit about what makes you, you! Then, we come back together for the remaining sessions, using these insights to build stronger communication and deepen emotional connection. Your relationship is unique to you and I view my role as collaborative, helping you find a path forward to the relationship you each want.
For family therapy, my approach depends on what is happening currently, and who I meet with and how that looks varies from family to family. Sometimes, I’ll work with the whole family as a group, while other times, I might focus on a smaller group or just two individuals who are experiencing the most distress. I recognize that not everyone may be ready or open to participate, so I hold space for those who are willing to engage, allowing for open, respectful conversations. This approach ensures that each session meets the unique needs of the family members who are present. In a family, each member has unique needs in order to thrive and sometimes, despite the best of intentions and lots of love, we can get stuck in negative patterns. The process of family therapy involves a commitment and openness to learning new ways of relating. The good news? Small changes in a family system can make a big impact! Even just a few sessions can make a positive difference.
In individual therapy, I begin by connecting with you and making sure you feel supported and welcome to take things at your own pace. We’ll discuss how often you can do sessions, ensuring that we make the most of the resources available to you. Our time together is one where you can turn up the volume on your feelings and dive into what’s happening in your life. My approach is collaborative—I’m here with you, whether that means exploring different scenarios or practicing new skills to support your growth. We can work together on learning boundaries, improving relationships, and finding strategies that feel right for you.
I’m flexible in matching how I approach support to what works best for you. Sometimes I’ll be gentle; other times, more direct—depending on what feels helpful. I may even ask, “Who do you need me to be right now?” whether it’s a gentle guide, a challenging mirror, or simply someone who helps you spot the blind spots you may have overlooked. I view therapy as a space that is open to you when you need it for as little or as long as you need. Once you’ve met your goals I invite you to go and live your best life, knowing that this is a space you can return to at any time for a new goal, a “tune up”, or a check in.
Let’s work together today, to help you create a better tomorrow
Our work together will be collaborative and guided by your goals. We’ll focus on understanding what’s most important to you, helping you build the tools and resilience needed to create the change you’re seeking. I see therapy as a place where you feel fully welcome to be yourself and explore what’s on your mind and in your heart.
Ready to begin? If you’re looking for a supportive space to heal and grow, I’d be honored to be a part of your journey.
