Depression Symptoms and Support in Ontario
Everyone feels down from time to time, but what may have started as the occasional low mood can move into a deeper state of depression, that’s when seeing a therapist may help. Depression can sneak up on you. Clinical depression (not to be confused with occasionally being in a low mood) is present most days and lasts most of the day, for a period of longer than 2 weeks. - Have I lost interest in work, hobbies, people or sex?
- Do I feel hopeless, excessively guilty, or pessimistic?
- Do I feel tired and irritable a lot?
- trouble concentrating, remembering or making decisions
- crying easily, or feeling like crying but being not able to
- Do I have thoughts of suicide? (which should always be taken seriously)
- No matter what I do, I cannot “get over” feeling this way?
Depression Can Come In Many Forms
How you experience depression is often unique to you, but there are some specific types of depression to be aware of. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD – occurs during the winter months due to reduced sunlight exposure), post-partum depression (in women after childbirth, due to hormonal changes). Depression can also be caused by major stressors in your life, vitamin deficiency, genetic pre-disposition, brain chemistry changes, childhood trauma, menopause, traumatic brain injury, or… out of the blue.
